Master Bath Renovation Part 1

Don't you just LOVE a good home improvement project!?!

The LAST DAY of my husband's paternity leave (well, technically it was vacation time... ) he decided that we needed to renovate our bathroom. I was all for it! Here I was barely two weeks post pardom, up all night nursing a baby, trying to recover from labor and delivery, lucky to get a shower, and now we will be ripping apart out bathroom!

When we moved in our bathroom looked like this:

It is approximately 10'x6' -- if that! It wasn't anything spectacular, and as we cleaned it up and moved in we realized that it had interested features.

Our home has fairly new copper plumbing throughout and you can see exactly where the pipes were run in the bathroom because the patch job wasn't all that great... like they never patched over their new drywall.

We had a couple surprises along the way.

Our medicine cabinet (which was mounted on the wall) wasn't actually attached to anything!
When my dear hubby took it off the wall you could tell there was a patch behind it where there had been an opening. But it wasn't drywall. It was actually a piece of plywood. You can see it next to the medicine cabinet in this picture.

The plywood was being help in place by a couple of nails strategically placed in the wall studs to keep the plywood from falling into the wall (the plywood was nailed to NOTHING!) Then it had been plastered over to keep it in place.

So my medicine cabinet was held up by a piece of plywood sitting in a hole in the wall... great!

The walls had several different textures on it. At one point it had been wallpapered (at least 3 times based on the different papers we were peeling off) and part of it had been ripped off and painted over. So, you can imagine how nice and neat these walls looked!

Then there was the lovely light fixture above the vanity:

My hubby worked hard to scrape the walls and remove as much of the wall paper layers as he could. Then he and I both patched and mudded (is that a word?!) the walls where there were obvious holes, dips, and other fun blemishes!!

After weeks of patching, sanding, patching, sanding, and patching and sanding some more, the walls were smooth and finally ready to be painted.

Once the paint had dried, we installed a new modern light fixture.

So much better than the original... don't ya think!?!

Next up the baseboards... and a special wall treatment for the bottom half of the wall that I am beyond excited for!! I can't wait to share it with you! Then a coat of paint for the trim and door, installation of the NEW medicine cabinet, and we are set!!

We have been sharing the guest bath with the kids for a couple weeks now, and as much as I love my kids...  both my husband and I AND our kids are ready for us to have our bathroom back!

Are you currently tackling any home improvement projects!?!? Once I post my final reveal I'm thinking of letting you all link up any home improvement projects that you have blogged about... what do you think?!? Any takers!?!

HAVE FUN!!!

MIA Lately...

Sorry I haven't been around much lately. Here's why...

As most of you know my little one was born 1 month ago today! Wow time flies!! She was born on a Friday. On the following Tuesday we went to the pediatrician to make sure she was still doing well -- she had started to become a little jaundice in the hospital. Well, she was still jaundice and had lost close to a pound. She was born at a whopping 8 lbs 11 oz. and by Monday was only 7 lbs 15 oz. She can lose up to 10% of her birth weight and doctors won't bat an eye... but since she was jaundiced the doc had us come back in a week to see how things were going.

In that week, I nursed her like crazy and my hubby let her suntan a little...

... and it was back to the dr. in another week to check on weight gain and her jaundice. At that appointment she was 2 weeks old (and should have regained her birth weight so that she would have been at least 8 lbs. 11oz.) Well, at her "weigh in" she was only 8 lbs. 5 oz.. The dr. was not happy and really, honestly, neither was I. She wasn't getting enough to eat. Thankfully the jaundice was just about gone... so that was good news!!

The pediatrician said to start supplementing every 2-3 feedings just to "top her off." As a mommy who wants to exclusively breastfeed, this was heart breaking! I cried, I was upset. Not only was my little one not gaining the weight she should... but I felt like it was MY FAULT! I wasn't depressed, just sad. So, we started supplementing when we could with soy formula (can't use the regular stuff because of my 3 year old's milk allergy).

This last Wednesday (almost a week ago) we headed back to the dr. again. I told my little one to "think heavy thoughts" as I took her out of her carrier and placed her on the scale at the doctors office. She was up to 8 lbs. 15 oz.. In ONE WEEK she had gained 10 ounces!!! FINALLY, I figured out how to help her get enough to eat.

It has been stressful. I have had to wake her up every 3 hours at night to eat. Needless to say, I feel like a walking zombie!!

Last night I decided since she has been gaining weight that I would just let her sleep and wake up when she's hungry. She let me sleep 3 hours the first time and 4 hours after that.

She is so precious, and I just can't seem to get enough cuddle time with her!!

I have a curtain tutorial in the works -- pictures taken, just need to write it up -- and a sewing tip on how to sew a french hem -- also just need to write it up. Hopefully now that my little one is eating better I will start having more time to sit at both my computer and my sewing machine! Here's hoping!! ♥

She's finally here!!

Now that my new little bundle of joy is 2 weeks old -- my how time flies -- I suppose it's about time to introduce her to everyone!! hehehe

I don't know how many of you care about my birth story, but I'll share a very condensed version of it.

- - - - -

I had a scheduled induction on Friday, July 20th. I was 4 days past my due date and since baby was measuring big, both my dr. and I felt it was time. Having never been induced before I was a little nervous.  My other two labors and deliveries went pretty smoothly, (16 and 10 hours) and most of labor was spent at home. Not only was I facing the unknown (being induced) but I would also have to spend my entire labor at the hospital -- something I didn't really want to do because I didn't know how long that would be.

We arrived at the hospital at 6am -- way too early for this girl -- and pitocin was started around 7:30. Why so long before it got started?!?! Well, let's just say, my veins are deep and I came out looking like a pin cushion!!

For the next several hours my husband did this:

While I was doing this:

{pics taken with my iphone.. sorry if they aren't crystal clear!}

Seems to me like he got off easy!! I will admit though, until about the last hour and a half of my labor -- when pitocin was turned up to 10 -- labor was actually pretty bearable!

After 6 hours of labor and 3 pushes my little girl was born at 1:42pm! She came so quickly that the nurses were preparing to deliver her thinking that the dr. might not make it in time.

8 lbs. 11 oz. and 21 inches long!!

A little bit cleaner, and under the warmer.

After a bath, and some prettying up, she was swaddled and sleeping peacefully.

Once we got settled into my recovery room, my hubby left to pick up our other two kiddos and his mom to visit.

Can you tell how excited they are to meet their new baby sister?!!?

Each of the kids got a present from the new baby. She gave them each a stuffed animal from Build a Bear.

After much debate, we finally decided on her name... Sarah Elizabeth.

We came home on Sunday the 22nd. It's amazing how small newborns really are, I had totally forgotten how little and fragile they are. Even though she was a big baby at 8 lbs 11 oz, she's still really small. Crazy how that works, huh!?

To say we are in love with this little cutie would be an understatement. Despite being up most of the night with her, she has been an angle. I am finally starting to get a little used to my 2 hr stretches of sleep at night.

My husband has been my biggest helper. From taking care of me at the hospital, to taking care of our other two 24/7, not to mention getting up with me at night time feedings to change Sarah's diaper while I sleep walk out to the couch he has been so helpful. I'm sad that he has to go back to work tomorrow, but so thankful that he was able to take 2 weeks off to be home while I recovered. He has been so wonderful -- even on those days (I won't say how many) that neither of us got to shower. I am hoping to survive that day tomorrow without crying... and if I can get a shower in there it will be a miracle!

A couple days ago I set up my own photo session with Sarah. I will give you a sneak peek at how the shots turned out, but I'm saving the rest of them for another post!!

I am so thankful to have such a precious little girl added to our family. She is definitely heaven sent! We love her so much, and even though my son is having a hard time keeping his grubby little fingers off of her face, we are all adjusting pretty well to being a new family of 5!

Have a great weekend everyone!!
