Infant Portrait Tutu Tutorial Give Away

Time for another give away and this one is just way too cute!!!!

Serra, from simplyserra, has offered this tutorial download in PDF for our lucky give away winner!!!

These tutu's are perfect for protraits of newborns because they slip on and off really easy, just like a headband... so there is no need to wake a sleeping baby! (we all know how dangerous that can be!) Plus.... it's a no sew project!!!

Here's a little about Serra and her shop:
I am a stay at home mommy to my sweet Jane who will become a big sister to a little sister come mid august. I am not looking forward to the hot pregnant summer, but I am looking forward to many days in the cool water!
I started my etsy shop for fun to bring in a little extra money to play with and buy the inessential essentials in life. Currently, I am saving up for my husbands 30th birthday party! I started selling infant/child headbands with flowers attached which gradually moved to simply selling flowers as supplies. People use my flowers for all sorts of ideas - to put on headbands, beanies, wedding dresses, clothing, tutu's, flip flops - the ideas are endless and I love to see others success in their own little hobbies/business' using my products!
There are a variety of flowers available in my shop. Some only make one time appearances as they are recycled from previous floral arrangements, and others I hope will stay for the long haul! Being a part of my newsletter includes benefits of discounts on my shops most popular flowers, first dibs on flowers before they hit etsy, and free shipping incentives. If you'd like to join in, contact me!

Marble Magnets Tutorial

Looking for an inexpensive way to make some cute custom magnets? Here's how.
Buy yourself a bag of these. I bought the biggest marbles they had at Joann's but they sell them at most craft stores in the floral section. Mine measured about an inch in diameter. They come in lots of different colors, but I chose clear. Next, go to the arts and crafts section and pick up some heavy duty magnets. I counted wrong (go figure), so I used some left over magnets on my fridge for the other ones.
I found some cute black and white graphics of milk cartons and juice boxes and used my paint program on the computer to color them in. The water bottles were as is. I took one of the marbles and used it to trace the shape so I could cut them out. Isn't it great that the marbles are see through? I was able to get the picture right where I wanted it!
Then cut out your circles. They don't have to be exact, and I found that I needed to cute a little inside of the circle I traced around each picture so that it fit well on the marble.

This is the fun part. Take out your handy-dandy mod podge and a sponge brush. Coat the back (flat side) of the marble with a thin coat of mod podge. Then apply your picture to the podge picture side down. Make sure that you can see your image through the rounded side of the marble. Repeat for all your marbles. Let it dry completely before moving on. It took mine between 1-2 hrs to dry all the way.

Here is what the dried marbles look like from the front. Cute huh?

Next glue the magnets on the back of the marbles. Put a good amount of glue on it so the marbles stay put!
Finished product on the fridge!

So, why did I choose beverages??!??! Good question. My daughter, if you remember from an earlier post, is a juice-a-holic. She also loves chocolate milk. We have to put a limit on her choco milk and juice intake to make sure that she still drinks water! So, I came up with this idea. She gets 2 cups of chocolate milk, and 2 cups of juice each day. Each time she drinks one, she moves the magnet for that beverage over to the other side of the fridge. When she wants another drink, she can see what her options are by looking at the fridge. Once the choco milk and juice magnets are gone... she knows she can't drink those any more that day.
The great thing about this project is its versatility. You can use your favorite scrapbook paper and make decorative magnets. Use photos to personalize magnets -- use one for each child and hang their art/school work on the fridge. Print pictures of chores and make a fridge chore chart.

New X-Large Flannel Receiving Blankets

Are you tired of using store bought receiving blankets that your baby grows out of by the time they are 2-3 months? I was too!!! The ones they sell in stores just aren't big enough... especially if you have big babies - like my two 9 pounders!!!

So, my solution?!?! Bigger receiving blankets! I am now selling these in my store here. They are approx. 40" square, some a little bigger. I have a couple cute styles right now with more on the way! They are large enough to last through toddlerhood and even fit my preschooler!

I chose to use light weight snuggle flannel so that it will keep baby warm, but also be great on cool summer nights! The fabric is so soft!!!! These blankets are professionally edged so they won't fray!

If you or some one you know is having a baby, consider a larger receiving blanket to last you much longer!

A Meal Time Breakthrough

So, my spunky 3 yr-old has decided she doesn't want to eat dinner anymore. She throws tantrums, kicking and screaming, and crying, on the floor. Tonight I tried something new that totally worked....

I made tacos for dinner, a Tuesday night favorite at our house. Instead of making her a "quesadilla" (pretty much a taco, but shaped like a quesadilla), or a burrito, or a taco, I put all the ingredients for a taco on her plate. She threw her usual tantrum about wanting juice with dinner and layed on the floor crying and complaining for about 15 minutes. My daughter would drink juice all day if I let her. I have to limit her. Instead of arguing with her, I just sat down and ate my dinner letting her lay on the floor crying. (Hopefully that doesn't make me a bad mom!)

Then... a miracle happened. She got up off the floor, started drinking her water, and walked over to her plate where she then asked me to help her cut her tortilla so she could make a sandwich. She then proceeded to create her own sandwich adding the beans, taco meat, tomatoes, and cheese. She ate the whole thing!!!! I gave her one of those really dull toddler knives so that she could spread her beans around on the tortilla. She thought it was so great because she made her own dinner!!!

Now that dinner is over, I am awaiting the next big meltdown of the evening... but at least I won the dinner battle! :)

Follow me Tuesday!

Super Easy Fried Rice

I don't know about you, but I LOVE Chinese food, but don't really care for take out... so I make my own. Here is my favorite recipe for Fried Rice. The best part about it is that you can pretty much use whatever you want... and whatever you have on had (frozen or fresh!)

Ingredients:
2 cups uncooked rice
1 cup frozen corn
1 cup vegetable stir fry mix (frozen or fresh)
1/8 cup your favorite teriyaki sauce
1 T extra virgin olive oil
Optional:
1/2 cup ham (cubed) - or chicken (cooked)
1 scrambled egg
1/4 cup diced red onion
1/4 c roasted peanuts or cashews
Start by cooking your rice in the rice cooker (don't you just love those!!!)

I wait until my rice is just about done, then I heat up a large skillet and add the olive oil and my ham and onions. Saute until ham is lightly browned and onions are mostly clear.

Next, add the frozen corn and other desired veggies. I happened to have a fresh stir fry mix with broccoli, snow peas, and carrot medalions. I cut the carrots and broccoli because they were HUGE. Stir everything together in your skillet and let it saute until veggies soften.

Once veggies are done, add scrambled eggs (if desired -- prescrambled -- I've tried before to scramble in the same skillet while the other stuff was cooking... sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't... but it can be done if you forget!)

At this point I like to add my teriyaki sauce to give all the veggies and meat a good coating. Then add your rice (that has by now finished cooking). Stir everything together and serve. Add more teriyaki sauce if desired!

The great thing is that you can just use whatever you have and it will turn out delicious! Frozen or fresh... doesn't matter. And here's the best part....

My little helper loves to nibble on the ingredients! So, she gets an extra dose of broccoli!

Another great thing about this recipe for my family, is that it is egg free and milk free! My son (18mos.) has severe milk, eggs, and peanut allergies. I made my fried rice egg free as well so that he could try some. He didn't eat much, but the fact that I can make a yummy meal that he can eat it HUGE at my house!!! You can of course add the egg and peanuts to yours though... it tastes super delicious!!!

(Don't mind my hubby on the couch behind... he's been sick this week... poor guy)
Feel free to add your own fried rice recipes as comments. I would love to see how you do Chinese Food at your house! :)

I got a new shipment of fabric today in the mail! Yay!!! I LOVE getting new fabric, and I am so excited about these prints!!

These are my newest "boy" prints because, let's face it, there just aren't very many cute boy prints out there. I saw these two and fell in love. They both come from designer Riley Blake, who has some phenominal prints out there! They both have a cream colored background to go nicely with my vanilla cream chenille!

This print comes from designer Lila Tueller who designs for Moda fabrics.

How cute is that?? I think it's adorable. It has the same cream background making it perfect for my vanilla cream chenille. It can also be paired with light pink chenille for a different look!
